Top 10 Fascinating Facts About National Breastfeeding Month

Well, it’s August and not only does that mean summer is winding down it also means  we’re celebrating World Breastfeeding Week August 1st – August 7th AND it’s also National Breastfeeding Month! Whoo hoo. I am passionate about this health month because I know as a doctor and a mommy that IT AIN’T EASY!!!!! No BREASTFEEDING, PUMPING and all that goes along with it AIN’T EASY! So, my hat is tipped to all you ladies out there sacrificing for your little ones so they can enjoy that #LIQUID GOLD! This past December marked my weaning date. Not because I wanted to but because I got pneumonia and had to stop nursing and pumping while on powerful antibiotics. It was an abrupt end to a 3 year journey .. And I finally packed up my pumps and threw those damn breast shields away. I loved nursing and the bond it created with my babies, but I really began to loathe pumping … Stay tuned this month and I’ll tell you why .. I’m sure you can all relate .. And please email me and share your wildest and craziest pumping and breastfeeding stories. Because ya know we are all on this ride together!

And here’s a few interesting facts I wanted to share with you about Breastfeeding:

  1. Breast milk is packed with disease-fighting nutrients that can help protect your baby from an assortment of illnesses like ear infections, stomach viruses, meningitis, and more due to the immunoglobulin A that is present in your milk and protects your baby from germs.

  1. Breastfeeding is a great way to get yourself back to your pre-baby weight, as it can burn up to 700 calories per day! That’s right! It takes energy to make all that liquid gold.

  1. Most babies can pick the scent of their mom’s breast milk as opposed to the scent from another mother’s milk, by two weeks! This familiar smell can be soothing to babies.

  1. Don’t forget: what you eat or drink, your baby eats and drinks as well: as it’s all expressed in your milk. Not only does this mean you should be sure to stick to a balanced diet but you should watch for signs of allergies or colic in your baby which could mean you may want to modify your diet in order to change your milk.

  1. Want your baby to fall into a “breast milk coma?” Did you know milk expressed in the evening has a higher fat content than milk expressed earlier in the day and helps your baby sleep. This also illustrates why it’s important to time stamp and label your milk if you are freezing or refrigerating it – the time you pumped truly matters!

  1. Breastfeeding is good for your health! Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancer in a mother’s later life and can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

  1. Almost 75% of all moms produce more milk in their right breast, regardless if they are right- or left- handed. The righties have it.

  1. Women who breastfeed for more than twelve months during their lifetime tend to have lower risks of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes.

  1. Breastfeeding can calm you down and make you less stressed because when your baby is nursing your body releases oxytocin and endorphins which can relax you and even help you sleep!

  1. Breastfeeding can help prevent your baby from becoming an allergy sufferer versus babies who drink cow or soymilk. The reason? Once again it’s attributed to Immunoglobulin A, a powerful form of protection for baby!

Stay tuned this month for more interesting facts, tips and, #mommyhacks about breastfeeding and pumping!

The other day I was talking with one of my husband’s college buddies and we were reflecting on the good ol days .. ya know before dirty thirty .. actually somewhere between 22-27 years old were the really great years. As we chatted we realized that all we really did when we were young, single, and without kids was: Wake up, go to work (or in my case school), come home and go out EVERY DAY (and night).

Maybe we hit a party, happy hour, or a friend’s place, but overall, we basically socialized and had very little responsibility for anything except for ourselves. We enjoyed life like it was golden and were so thankful that we could wake up every day and do the same thing repeatedly, night after night. I mean isn’t that what all 20-something’s do when they live in NYC? Ah yeah!

Well my friends, those days are gone! That harsh reality has sunk in. Huge sigh as I pour out a little liquor for the homies (and wild times) that are no more. Grown up life is here now, that reality has sunk in!

It did so a few years ago when I realized I don’t need an alarm clock to get up on weekends; because around 5:50 AM I have my own organic all natural alarm clock. Every Saturday and Sunday I am awakened by the stark shrill of a toddler screaming my name over and over in a piercingly high voice that gets louder as if he thinks I didn’t hear him the first 20 times he shrieked, beckoning me to his room because he wants milk and to watch Ninja Turtles. OMG, times have changed…

To address these changes, and how I best deal with them, I’m introducing a new series of blog posts, vlogs, tips and advice I’m calling: #MOMMYHacks! I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite items to “get us through” – through the day, week or just through life in general. If you’re a mom you know there are three things you need from anything you buy for your home and family: You need them to be:

  • Accessible – Ain’t nobody got time to wait longer than Prime delivery would take!
  • Affordable – No explanation necessary ladies. I don’t buy hot off the runway fresh to def Celine bags like I used to, do you?
  • Useful – We all have enough things stored away from toys to clothes (just in case we have another child) so we can’t afford to “save” anything else or collect more products unless they’re really useful and worth it.

I’ll be dedicating plenty of these posts to products and life hacks that REALLY WORK and tick those three boxes. These are all things I love or a wise ol’ grandma has gifted down to me – that are 100% AAU – accessible, affordable, and useful!

I hope you enjoy my tips, tricks and finds, and try them yourself. I encourage you to reach out and let me know what you think or share your own #MOMMYHacks that are 100% AAU, because ya’ know raising a child takes a village … and we are all in this village together!

3 Ways to Get Over Your Doctor-Avoidance-Syndrome

doctor-fears

Let’s face it, I know you’re avoiding me. Even though we both know we have a date (so to speak) you’re playing way too hard to get. I’m talking about your regular wellness check “dates” and I’m acknowledging that a large percentage of you find excuses for – or all-out-ignore – the fact that you need to be checking in with your regular physician, your Ob-Gyn – any other specialist you need to remain in optimal health – on a regular basis, not just when you feel something irregular may be going on.

Here’s something else I know: Fear of the doctor is a normal, common thing.  For some it’s just a little bit of tension, and for others it can manifest into a full-fledged anxiety situation. Making and following through with those appointments isn’t always easy, and I empathize with you, I really do. Going to your doctor’s appointments isn’t the same as a girl’s day at the spa and often we let a lot of anxiety build up (perhaps supplemented by some symptoms Google searching) and all of that can lead you to avoiding your necessary appointments all together.

Well it’s got to stop.  In fact, the way to ensure you spend as little time as possible in any medical offices, is by making sure you go in the first place.  It’s all about prevention! If we work together, now and regularly to keep you in optimal health, you can spend less time with doctor’s like me and more time doing the things you love. The cherry on top is that you’ll be feeling amazing while doing them.

Like I said, I’m human too, and I know fear of physicals, annuals, and other appointments is valid and normal.  But we can’t let it stop us, so to help you break through those feelings I’ve got some helpful suggestions to get you out of your Doctor-Avoidance zone.

If you have any tips that work for you be sure to share them in the comment section below!

#1 Build Your Health “Dream Team”

Your body is your temple, your health is a priority, and everyone working on it should feel the same way.   I want you to spend as much time as needed building a health “dream team” that is filled with doctors and other practitioners who you feel comfortable with, who you trust, who you feel good about, and who you truly feel you can work with and talk with (openly and honestly) about keeping yourself in good health. You truly can like your physicians.  Ask your friends, get on Google, and check with other doctors you’re already seeing for references. Make yourself – and your health – a priority and take the time to assemble a supportive team to rely on. You’ll see that your appointments will quickly become a more positive experience.

#2 Focus on What Motivates You Health-Wise

Instead of letting yourself get fixated on your fears and anxiety-inducing anticipation, start focusing on why you want to be your healthiest self.  I’m talking, make a list and writing down specific, real reasons that keeping your health in check is important. Refer to this list regularly.  Perhaps it’s because you want to be a fit and healthy parent for years to come.  Maybe you want to avoid health problems that your relatives had or have.  Maybe it’s all about looking fine in a leather pencil skirt or swimwear (that’s fine, we all have our reasons).  You may be someone who is just sick and tired of, well, feeling sick and tired, and you’re in need of a major health overhaul.

The key is to put your attention on the Why, why you should be going to the doctor, as well as the positives, what positive benefits you’ll get out of going.

What we focus on expands, so shift your thinking from fear-based thoughts to the rewards of a healthy life supported by professionals that you know, like, and trust.

#3 Take the Mystery Out of Your Healthcare

This is not a case of “ignorance is bliss”. You don’t have to wonder about what’s going on in your body, during your appointments, or before, during, and after a procedure.  Instead of being a bystander while you go to the doctor, take tests, or take in advice your a medical professional is giving you, be sure you understand every part of the process.  Ask questions, and if you still don’t understand something – whether it’s a blood test or a poke or prod – ask about it.  When you begin to demystify what’s going on and why it’s happening, you’ll stop feeding yourself anxiety-inducing hypothetical thoughts and you’ll stop fearing the unknown.  Knowledge is not only power, knowledge is a fear-buster, trust me.

Now it’s your turn:

Do you have any stress or anxiety when it comes to seeing a doctor?  What have you done to tackle it? Share your story or tips in the comments below!

  1. Kashi Hummus CrispsOrganic Kashi Crisps – When I was pregnant two things happened: I became even more aware of what foods I put into my body, and I  discovered new found snack cravings.  These Kashi Crisps helped satisfy my “savory tooth” while also being totally guilt free!
  2. Seventh Generation DetergentSeventh Generation Natural Powder Laundry Detergent – The way I clean the clothes and bedding that directly touches my skin is just as important to me as what I put on my skin, which is why I stick to natural and organic deodorant.  Bonus points for this Seventh Generation pick?  It smells delicious too!   My favorite is the Real Citrus and Wild Lavender.

  4. Honest Co. 5. tarte-mascaraTarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara – To know me is to know I love my makeup, but I also love my skin and body; which is why I often turn to Tarte and their eco-friendly makeup line. April is National Donate Life Month

Did you know the first kidney transplant was successfully performed in 1954. Organ transplantation has come a long way since then, but even with medical advancements today there more than 124,000 people on the organ transplant list (UNOS). Every 10 minutes a person’s name is added to the list and he or she waits for an organ – that’s 150 people per day! But, sadly, 21 people die everyday waiting to receive an organ that never comes.

1 organ donor can save the life of 8 people!

In 2014 more than 24,000 people received an organ or tissue donation while only 14,000 people were donors. You’re never too old to consider becoming an organ donor. And age doesn’t preclude you from RECEIVING an organ. There are infants and even grandparents on the transplant list. This month please consider giving the gift of life. There’s so many ways to give. Why not opt to donate blood or platelets? Or consider putting your name on the bone marrow registry list? Even better why not register to become an organ donor. Check out this link to find your state’s registry. http://organdonor.gov/becomingdonor/stateregistries.html

You never know the life you save may be the life of someone you love.

Wishing you great health,

Dr. V

Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

DecDrunkDriving

It’s the holiday season and that means holiday parties and libations! Millions of us will be on the road more than usual while we shop for gifts, and drive to and from holiday parties this year. Sadly although we have all heard of M.A.D.D. and the devastating impact driving drunk has on people’s lives, millions of people continue to drive drunk, drugged, or distracted! In 2012 1.3 million Americans were arrested for DUI. What’s crazy is every 53 minutes someone is killed in a drunk driving crash. And every 90 seconds, someone is injured. December is Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month and this December YOU can help prevent drunk and drugged driving injuries and deaths. Every year tens of thousands of people die due to drunk or drugged driving, and many innocent lives are shattered. Studies have shown the highest percentage of drunk drivers are those between the ages of 21 to 24 (34%), followed by ages 25 to 34 (30%). Interestingly, drunk-driving deaths dropped nationwide last year but even one death is still too many.

We’ve all heard of drunk driving but what is drugged driving? Well it is driving while using any mind-altering substance – whether that be prescription pills or even marijuana. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Roadside Survey almost 20% of weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for illegal, prescription, or over-the-counter drugs, and “more than 11% tested positive for illicit drugs.”

What drugs do you ask contribute to accidents? Great question. Studies and ER visits have shown that alcohol and THC, (tetrahydrocannabinol -the main component of marijuana), are the most commonly found substances in impaired drivers, fatally injured drivers, and motor crash victims’ blood. Other drugs that have repeatedly shown up in high levels in toxicology tests are: cocaine, benzodiazepines prescribed for anxiety or sleep, and opioid pain relievers. This means that even if you have a prescription for a medication and are under a doctor’s supervision it’s important to remember that drugs that have sedative effects like Percocet, Vicodin, and Xanax, and Ambien are powerful and can have lasting effects.

So how can you prevent debilitated driving?

  • If possible use public transportation
  • Have a designated driver set BEFORE you start partying.
  • Don’t serve minors – even at home
  • Have a last call – stop serving alcohol an hour before your party ends.
  • Offer non-alcoholic drink options to your guests.
  • Be flexible – and offer guests to stay with you if they are unfit to drive home
  • Keep cab fare on you or consider taking Uber.
  • Stay off the phone. Be alert especially at night
  • Don’t send or read texts while driving

Remember buzzed driving is drunk driving.. whether it is alcohol or drugs.

Be safe and have a wonderful holiday season.

XO
