I Had a Drink Before I Found Out I Was Pregnant, What Do I Do?

no alcohol_prego

Now that I’m a mommy-to-be myself, the questions I’m asked about health and medicine veer even more into the “motherhood” category, and this question in particular is one that is quite common.  Whether you’re a mom, planning on becoming a mom in the near future, or are friends with women in either boat, I’m sure the answer will be useful to you!

Now I don’t encourage heavy alcohol consumption at any point of your life pregnant or not, but we’ve all had a “celebratory night” or two in the past, and I’m 100% behind you if from time to time you want a glass of wine to unwind after a long day (when you’re not with child).  More women than you may suspect often find out they’re pregnant shortly after they’ve experienced one of the two types of nights I described above.  This causes many of these new mommy-to-be’s to panic and wonder, “Have I harmed my baby?”  “Should I go see my doctor?” To help ease these scary thoughts let me be the first to say, Don’t freak out!  It’s highly unlikely your night out or in has made a negative impact on the tiny, little cluster of cells beginning to grow inside you.  I myself had this same fear when I first found out I was pregnant. Truth time: I had Botox 3 weeks before I found out I was pregnant, and I had two glasses of wine the night before I found out! OMG I was worried. But the truth is, that the body is an amazing system. And honestly if anything is wrong with your budding pregnancy in the beginning stages when your baby is still an embryo – a tiny cluster of cells, well, then the body has it’s ways of working it out. Most miscarriages early on in pregnancies are due to chromosomal abnormalities, and usually occur and women don’t even know they were even ever pregnant.

Now back to that glass of wine or a shot of vodka and your budding baby. No pregnancy can ever be guaranteed to be perfect, but studies have shown repeatedly as have the real life experiences of women around the world that if you had a few drinks early in your first trimester before knowing you were pregnant and especially before you were 6 weeks pregnant then you CAN and WILL most likely have a healthy baby. The time that we are most concerned about birth defects and alcohol consumption is the period when the baby’s organs are forming, called organogenesis, which occurs between weeks 6 and 12. During this time a women puts her baby at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome and other complications if she is drinking heavily – meaning at least 3 or more drinks a day.  And of course, you don’t want to keep drinking once you have found out you are pregnant as it can lead to low birth weight, premature birth and other complications.

I encourage you to stay away from the booze and all other “naughty” treats during the rest of your pregnancy, as anything you eat or drink your baby eats and drinks as well, but that cocktail or two you had before you knew you were even with child is nothing to lose sleep over!

Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy

Dr. V’s Rules for Getting in Shape for Summer

outdoor-workout_01_header

I can hardly believe it either – it’s nearly time to squeeze back into our swimsuits and flaunt our legs in shorter hemlines.  As much as I’m sure you’re all welcoming warmer weather, many of you are probably hitting the gym and working on getting in shape for summer. A fan of fitness myself, I applaud your efforts, and encourage you to make them a habit year round!  That said, for those of you just starting out, here are some of my rules for summer training and shaping up!

#1 – Always Check in with Your Doctor First

If you’re adding a new routine to your life – whether it’s training for a 5K or starting a spin class, it’s always a good idea to check in with your doctor before you begin.  This is especially important if you are pregnant, have any pre-existing conditions or think you’ll be really upping the intensity during your training program in comparison to how you usually work out.

#2 – Make Hydration Mandatory Before, During & After Working Out

Sometimes we’re so much in our “zone” that we forget to drink water while working out in the hot summer sun.  Then we wonder why we’re tired, underperforming, or feel crummy after the workout!  For those of you exercising in the warmer months, be sure you’re hydrating before, during, and after each and every workout.

#3 – Proper Gear is a Must (& an Excuse to Go Shopping)

Who wants an excuse to do a little shopping, raise your hand! You’ll feel better, do better and want to continue working out if you’re dressed properly for your workouts.  This means researching the best shoes for the specific type of fitness program you’re following, picking out an outfit that is comfortable, and wicks away sweat and “works for your workout” (i.e., no loose pants if you’re in spin class).  If you’re doing things outdoors this also means sunglasses and perhaps a hat to protect your face and eyes from the sun and other elements, like pesky bugs, wind kicking up dirt, etc.  The cherry on top of all this great gear is that beyond helping you perform better, it will incentivize you to keep “showing up” as a workout warrior because you’ll want to show off your new looks!

#4 – Slather on that Sunblock

Sure you want to soak in the Vitamin D rays while working out in the sun, but you do not want to deal with skin cancer risks, not to mention a future of wrinkly, sun-damaged skin.  In the summer I recommend you select a sunblock that is water and sweat proof, which will protect you without you having to worry about you sweating it off!

#5 – If You’re Working Out Outdoors at Night Be Careful!

The hot summer sun can be a beast during the day and because of that I know many of you will opt to run, bike or hike later in the day.  Though it does bring cooler temperatures it also means that you’re putting yourself at risk in a few more ways, so be sure you’re taking the proper precautions before you head out after sun down.  If you’re anywhere near traffic be sure you’re wearing reflective, bright colored clothing to warn cars, bikes, and other people that you’re there.  I also like to encourage women to work out in pairs or groups (many cities have running groups you can join).  No matter how safe your neighborhood is, running or biking alone at night can be tricky, so give yourself and those who love you peace of mind and do it with a partner.  Finally, don’t forget that when the sun goes down, lots of bugs come out.  Be sure you have a great sunblock on to keep mosquitos at bay!

Wishing you a great workout!

THE MERS VIRUS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO STAY HEALTHY

MERS – Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

OK – First it was SARS back in 2003 and now we’re hearing about MERS. What are these four letter words all about?  If you have been watching the news then you have probably heard the term MERS but you may not really know the ins and outs of what it is. So, I’m here to share the details that you NEED to know about MERS to keep YOU and YOUR family healthy especially since it’s touched down in the United States.

1) WHAT IS MERS?

MERS is Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. It is called a coronavirus (MERS-CoV), a virus in the same family but slightly different than SARS because it has spikes on it that resemble a crown. MERS was first discovered in September of 2012 and cases are continuing to be identified. Globally, from September 2012 to date, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been informed of more than 250 cases of laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS, and more than 90 deaths from the virus.

2) WHERE DID IT START?

The virus was originally detected in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. Initially cases were linked to countries in the Arabian Peninsula, and confirmed in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Tunisia, Italy, France, United Kingdom (UK), Greece, and Malaysia. The virus was renamed in May of 2013 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses to the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

3) HOW EASILY IS IT SPREAD?

The presence of MERS is relatively new and as health professionals we are learning more about it everyday. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and WHO believes however, that it is NOT as easy to contract MERS, compared to other viruses like the flu or common cold because it grown deeper in the respiratory tract vs. the nose or upper throat.

We live in a global community and people can travel easily all over the world in a short period of time. Which means, now we have now seen MERS here in the United States. As of May 20th, 3 cases have been confirmed. The first two were linked to healthcare workers who were in Saudi Arabia and they themselves travelled to the US. The most recent third case is of an Illinois businessman who took meetings with an individual who was unknowingly infected. Therefore, this third patient who has reported MERS, did not actually travel to the Middle East himself, but caught the virus here from a person who had recently travelled from the Middle East.

The CDC has reported that they tested 50 people who came in contact with the person who infected the Illinois businessman and no others were affected. Also the Illinois businessman had two separate meetings with the infected person, and perhaps had significant exposure during that time.

4) HOW DID IT GET TO THE US?

The presence of foreign healthcare workers in the Arabian Peninsula may provide the most significant means of spreading MERS outside the Middle East. Similar to SARS many years ago, healthcare workers who provide care to sick people can become infected and then travel overseas and infect people in the US. Therefore, it’s extremely important to identify people with the virus and keep them from spreading it to others.

5) WE’VE BEEN TOLD THE SITUATION IS “SERIOUS” BY THE CDC, HOW SERIOUS IS IT? HOW WORRIED SHOULD WE BE?

To date, the CDC and WHO have said that MERS is not a serious concern for public health at this time. What IS important is for every individual to be aware of how the virus is transmitted so you know how to prevent it.

In preparation of US cases, in 2013 the CDC developed and distributed a test kit for MERS to state health departments. Also for each suspected or confirmed case the CDC assigns people to track down contacts of each patient and test them as well.

6). WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MERS?

There is a wide range of symptoms of MERS, which are similar to that of any other common cold or flu virus:

  1. Fever more than 100.4°F
  2. Cough
  3. Chills and body aches
  4. Headache
  5. Non-productive cough
  6. Shortness of breath

 Other symptoms can include:

  1. Sore throat
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Dizziness
  4. Diarrhea
  5. Vomiting
  6. Abdominal pain.

If you or a loved one has any of those symptoms AND travelled from countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula OR has had close contact with a person who has travelled to the Arabian Peninsula and developed fever and a respiratory illness within 14 days after traveling immediately call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room.

7) IS THERE A TREATMENT OR VACCINATION FOR MERS?

At this time there is no specific treatment for MERS. Treatment is supportive, just as it would be if you were diagnosed with a common cold or the flu:

  1. Fluids
  2. Rest
  3. Stay away from people who are sick
  4. Cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze.

8) HOW CAN I PROECT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY FROM MERS?

The MERS virus – which has similar symptoms to common upper respiratory tract infections such as influenza and the common cold can be prevented in much the same way as any other virus.

  1.  Hand hygiene is the most important way to prevent the spread of the virus. Wash with soap and water for 60 seconds or use an alcohol –based hand gel to clean hands.Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Or you can cough into your sleeve as a way to reduce exposure of virus into your hands. This is important because every time you cough droplets can spread up to 6 feet.
  2.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean unwashed hands.
  3.  Avoid close contact with sick people. Do not share drinks, eating utensils, or kiss sick people.
  4.  As often as needed disinfect surfaces that sick people come in contact with, such as doorknobs, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and toys.
  5.  If you are ill DO NOT go to work and avoid crowded places such as malls and grocery stores.

Health officials at the CDC and WHO have said that the MERS virus is not as contagious as the flu or common cold but awareness is key to prevention.

And remember if you or a loved one has travelled to the Middle East or come into contact with someone who has travelled to the Middle East and within 14 days of returning have fever with cough or shortness of breath seek immediate medical care. Call ahead to your doctor and let them know your symptoms and also that you have recently travelled so they can take appropriate prevention measures at the office.

Wishing you good health.

May is National Lupus Month

LupusPurpleribbon

May is National Lupus awareness month. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects young women between the ages of 15-44, including Grammy award-winning singer, Toni Braxton. 90% of people affected with Lupus are women although when the disease affects men it can be more disabling and debilitating, and even children and newborn babies can have Lupus. Interestingly women of color are diagnosed with Lupus 2-3 times more often than Caucasian women. Lupus is a chronic disease that can affect any organ of the body from the skin to the heart. For 1/3 of those with Lupus the only visible symptom is the malar, “butterfly rash” found on the nose and cheeks. Researchers have been working for years to understand the basis of Lupus and how to treat and cure it because for many the long-term complications from Lupus can be devastating and include strokes, seizures, heart attacks, and renal failure.  In 2010 the first drug was approved to specifically treat Lupus and many people are living long and productive lives with Lupus. This month stand up and support the 1.5 million Americans who are living with Lupus by wearing purple.

Wishing you good health.
