Winter Skin Tips

5 Winter skin tips:

Winter is HERE! The lovely suntanned J-Lo glow you lusted after and achieved this summer is gone, and now you’re thinking all you have to look forward to is wind whipped reddened cheeks, cracked lips and a runny nose. No ladies, that is not your fate, if you follow these 5 winter skin tips:

1) Don’t over exfoliate or over soak in the tub:

The outside air is dry and over-exfoliation will not only stretch the skin causing scratches or abrasions but also cause more DRYNESS. In the winter, try to exfoliate just once a week to maintain the skin’s moisture and healthy glow. Over-exfoliation not only dehydrates the skin but also can lead to dark spots called hyperpigmentation, and skin damage. Similarly taking long hot steamy showers or baths dries out the skin. So don’t spend too much time in a long HOT HOT shower or bath. Aim to take a warm shower or bath and keep it to less than 10 minutes. When you jump out pat dry don’t scrub or rub to maintain your skin’s natural oils and moisture.

2) Try a spray tan:

You say you look skinnier and feel better with a tan, well being a tanning bed goddess dramatically increases your risk for skin cancer. If you want a year-round glow try a spray tan or self-tanning lotion. Spray tan and self-tanner are applied to the outer layers of the skin. They DON’T penetrate the deep layers of the skin or get absorbed by the body. The main ingredient in spray tans is dihydroxyacetone called DHA. The FDA has approved DHA as a tanning ingredient since 1977. It is a colorless compound with a carbohydrate (sugar) component. Make sure if it’s your first time using a spray tan or self-tanner product you test it on a small patch of your skin first to make sure you don’t have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the product AND don’t inhale the fumes (when you do get sprayed)!

3) Moisturize .. moisturize .. moisturize ..

Day and Night. This will keep your skin hydrated. Look for a product that has humectants. And when your shower instead of a harsh deodorant cleansing bar or soap try a body wash that is moisturizing. Moisturizing the skin helps replenish the natural oils the body loses through the day. Elements such as weather and pollution, medications, and even regular showers and baths can dry out our skin, and moisturizing recharges it! Even though it’s cloudy, foggy, or snowing it’s important to moisturize your face with a product that has at least SPF 15 when you are outdoors to protect yourself from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

4) Don’t lick your lips:

Licking your kissers dries them out and makes them crack. Normally the lips have a very thin protective layer of oil that coats and keeps them from drying. However, winter air is dry. Therefore, when you lick your lips to moisten them you actually lick off that protective oil layer; and the water in your saliva evaporates and dries out your kissers causing them to chap. Petroleum jelly products like Vasoline help prevent moisture loss but they don’t penetrate or repair chapped lips.  To truly help repair chapped lips look for lip balms with lanolin or a moisturizer.

5) Buy a humidifier:

As the temperature goes down and the heat goes up in the house the amount of moisture in the air dramatically decreases. This is the reason you may wake up in the night gasping for air, with a dry mouth and stuffy nose and kicking off the covers because it’s HOT! It is hot, and there’s no moisture in the air. The remedy – a humidifier. Put it in your bedroom and allow it to moisturize the air and your body while you sleep. Don’t turn it up too much otherwise the air will feel damp, aim for 30%-50% humidity.

Wishing you healthy glowing winter skin.

Learn how to Pop Pills Properly – Ask Your Pharmacist

Millions of Americans are taking more than 3 medications every day. Let’s get real: Do you know why you’re taking your pills every day. What are they each for? When is the best time of the day to take those pills? What are the side effects? If you don’t know the answer to these questions you need to chat with you doctor and your PHARMACIST. Pharmacists are experts in the pharmacology and clinical use of medicines. They understand drugs at a physiologic and molecular level, and know how they will work in your body.

Working together as a team, your doctor, you and your pharmacist can ensure that you get the most out of your medications to keep you healthy.

Get to know your pharmacist.

He or she is a very important person who can:

1) Confirm that the prescription your doctor has written is complete
2) Ensure the medications you take will NOT interact with each other
3) Confirm that the medication and dose are right for you
4) Explain to you in a way that YOU understand how to take your medication

Here are some prescription tips from Dr. V:

1) Fill all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy
2) Check with you pharmacist before you buy any over the counter medications
3) Show your pharmacist a list of all the medications you are taking, prescription and non-prescription.
4) Tell your pharmacist about any allergies you have to medications.
5) Feel free to ask why you are taking a particular medication. Research them.
6) When you start a new medication or want to know how to take a particular medication: ask to speak with the pharmacist
7) Read the label on the medication bottles
8) Write down all of your medications: the name, dose, and how you take it (i.e. one pill 2 times daily) and keep it in your purse or wallet with you at all times.
9) TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS AS PRESCRIBED !! If you have questions or are unclear about anything ASK YOUR PHARMACIST !!

5 Sexy summer skin tips:

It is officially summer in the City!! The warmth from the sun is glorious … it just makes you feel alive and refreshed … but be careful and please practice sun safety …Here’s a few summer sun tips:

1) Don’t over exfoliate:

Over exfoliation can stretch the skin causing scratches or abrasions. Because the skin is your body’s largest organ and your first line of defense against harm, cracks and breaks in it increase the risk of infection. Normally, exfoliation is a process to remove the outer layers of dead skin cells and allow the deeper layers of skin come to the surface. However, it is best to exfoliate only 1-2 times a week at most. Over-exfoliation not only dehydrates the skin but also can lead to dark spots called hyperpigmentation, and skin damage.

2) A little sun is OK .. because it helps increase our Vit D levels

Your body makes Vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun. But cloudy days, spending considerable time indoors, or having darker skin limits the amount of Vit D your skin can make. Therefore, it is important to get Vit. D from other ways because Vitamin D is necessary to build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis. Foods such as salmon, cereals, eggs, milk, and even mushrooms are good sources of Vit D. It is a good idea to breathe fresh air, get out of the office and take a walk or eat your lunch outdoors. However, if you are going to be outside make sure to protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays that cause skin cancer with sunscreen that has at least SPF15.

3) A skoche more than a little sun is BAD:

Being a sun goddess indoors on a tanning bed or outdoors under the sky dramatically increases your risk for skin cancer. If you want that J-Lo glow try a spray tan or self-tanning lotion. Make sure if it’s your first time using a spray tan or self-tanner product that you test it on a small patch of your skin first to make sure you don’t have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the product.

4) Moisturize .. moisturize .. moisturize ..

Day and Night. This will keep your skin hydrated. Moisturizing the skin helps replenish the natural oils the body loses through the day. The body loses moisture and collagen naturally as we get older. The skin is dried out by the elements we encounter everyday like the weather, sun damage, pollution, medications, and even regular showers and baths. Moisturizing recharges the skin, increases blood circulation, and rehydrates. It’s especially important to moisturize your face with a product that has at least SPF 15 when you are outdoors. The key to beautiful skin is prevention. Love and take care of you skin early in life and avoid problems later.

5) Protect your Mani and Pedi with a little Solar Oil:

Apply Solar Oil to your nails and cuticles 2-3 times a day to keep your nails healthy AND keep that WET fresh out the nail shop look lasting! Solar oil is made by CND (Creative Nail Design, the company who makes Shellac) from Jojoba, Sweet Almond oil, Vitamin E, and Rice Bran. When applied it will penetrate the polish, yes even gel and shellac polish and nourish your nails. Say good-bye to dry, cracked nails. And the 2-for-1 .. solar oil can also be used for other purposes such as dry skin.. try rubbing a few drops on your hands.

Distracted Driving

Did you know that texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to have an accident? Yes it’s true ..

In 2009 almost 500,000 people were injured as a result of distracted driving.

Your reaction time while driving and using a cell phone – even with a hands-free device – is the same reaction time as a person with a blood alcohol level at the legal limit of .08 percent

Talking on the phone even using a hands-free device uses about 40% of your brainpower .. that should be focused on the road.

Drivers between the ages of 16-20 are the most likely to be involved in a fatal crash where distraction is reported.

… wait though .. it’s not just teens that are multi-tasking while driving ..

30 to 39-year-olds have the highest percentage of cell phone use in fatal crashes

Sending or receiving a text takes a your eyes off the road for almost 5 seconds. This is the amount of time needed to travel the entire length of a football field at 55mph.

So please don’t text and drive. Most states have distraction laws in place. Do you know the laws in your state? Injuring someone while texting and driving could cost you jail time and a fine…
